U.S Dept. of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration Announces Preparation of Environmental Document for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Livermore, CA - The U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today announced the availability of the draft Site-wide Environmental Impact Statement for Continued Operation of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Supplemental Stockpile Stewardship and Management Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (LLNL SW/SPEIS). The document is being prepared in accordance with the Council on Environmental Quality's National Environmental Policy Act.

"The document analyzes the potential environmental impacts associated with continuing current Livermore Laboratory operations and foreseeable new and/or modified operations and facilities for approximately the next ten years," NNSA Livermore Site Office Manager, Camille Yuan-Soo Hoo said.

A Notice of Availability of the draft LLNL SW/SPEIS and the plan to hold public hearings will be published in the Federal Register on February 27, 2004. The purpose of the notice is to invite public participation in the review process.

A 90-day public comment period will begin with the publication of the notice in the Federal Register on February 27, 2004 and will continue until May 27, 2004. Public hearings will be held at three locations:

  1. Tuesday April 27, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Background: NNSA is updating the 1992 Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report for Livermore Lab. A Site-Wide review is conducted every 10 years.
