The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Oakland Operations Office (OAK) announces the availability of a draft environmental assessment for the proposed construction and operation of the Molecular Foundry project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Berkeley, California.

DOE is seeking public comment on the draft environmental assessment during a 30-day comment period, which concludes on January 13, 2003. Written comments should be sent to: Ms. Katherine Johnescu, DOE NEPA Document Manager, U.S. Department of Energy, Berkeley Site Office, MS 90-1023, One Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720 or sent via e-mail to Katherine.johnescu@oak.doe.gov, or by fax to (510) 486-4710.

The draft environmental assessment is available for public review at the following locations: the DOE Oakland Operations Office Energy Information Center, First Floor in the Oakland Federal Building North Tower, Room 180N, 1301 Clay Street, Oakland, (510) 637-1762; the Berkeley Lab Main Library, Building 50, Room 4034, Berkeley, (510) 486-5621; and the Berkeley Public Library, 2090 Kittredge Street, Second Floor Reference Desk, Berkeley, (510) 981-6100. Berkeley Lab proposes to construct The Molecular Foundry, a six-story laboratory building of approximately 86,500 gross square feet and a utility building of about 8,000 square feet, in the southeast corner of the site. It would be used for the interdisciplinary exploration and study of nanosciences, and would be a national facility open to visiting scientists. Construction would take place between January 2004 and February 2006.
